The skeksis, who are the ruling race in Thra, have ruled the Crystal for almost a thousand trine. Although their kingdom still controls Thra and is benevolent toward the Gelflings, their empire has begun to fall from grace. The Skeksis have only recently learned about the power of the crystal. This is when they began to lose their pretense of being noble guardians of the Crystal.
Throughout the series, Rian and his companions face challenges from the Skeksis. They encounter a variety of creatures. One is a skekGra, a splintered race of creatures, and another is an urGoh, a Mystic. The skekGra and urGoh want to merge and become one. The Dual Glaive is an ancient weapon that can put an end to the Skeksis’ rule.
The Skeksis have stolen the Crystal of Truth and have been siphoning its life force. As a result, they have declared themselves the rulers of Thra. Skeksis scientists create alternate methods to use the Crystal’s energy. However, one of them accidentally learns to siphon essence from it. They abduct a Crystal Guard Gelfling named Mira, but Mira dies when the Skeksis eat her essence. Rian, on the other hand, survives the ordeal.
